Angelica Essential Oil
Angelica is a striking biennial plant belonging to the Apiaceae family. It is a large, hairy plant with beautiful fern-like leaves and distinctive umbels of small white flowers. Beneath the ground it develops a substantial root and rhizome, while the whole plant possesses a powerful, aromatic character.
Angelica essential oil is typically a pale yellow oil with a rich, earthy and slightly aniseed aroma. It has a deep, grounding quality that reflects the character of the plant itself.
Traditionally, Angelica has been regarded as a strengthening and stimulating oil. It has been used to support the circulatory and immune systems, stimulate the appetite and promote healthy digestive function. Its traditional properties include antispasmodic, carminative, emmenagogic, expectorant, febrifuge, nervine, stimulant and tonic actions.
Within aromatherapy, Angelica has been associated with digestive discomfort such as flatulence, as well as nervous tension and stress-related conditions. It has also traditionally been used in formulations concerned with congested skin, fluid retention, gout, bronchial congestion and the accumulation of metabolic waste.
Angelica blends particularly well with Patchouli, Clary Sage, Vetiver and Lemon, creating combinations that can be earthy, grounding and uplifting.
Angelica has a particularly fascinating place within the world of sacred oils. Its very name evokes the angelic realm, and in the energetic tradition described by Felicity Warner, Angelica is regarded as an oil with a strong connection to the spiritual and subtle aspects of our being.
Warner includes Angelica within her collection of sacred oils and explores its use alongside oils such as Silver Fir and Elemi in work centred around re-capturing and re-wilding the soul.
Energetically, Angelica can be viewed as an oil of courage, protection, connection and inner strength. Its earthy nature encourages us to remain rooted and connected to ourselves, while its association with the angelic realm offers a sense of being supported and guided.
The combination of earth and spirit makes Angelica an intriguing oil for times of transition. It can be used symbolically when we are seeking to reconnect with our inner wisdom, reclaim parts of ourselves that have become lost or neglected, or find the courage to move forward.

One interpretation of Angelica's energetic action is that it helps us to stand firmly in the physical world while remaining open to something greater than ourselves. Its grounding aroma can provide an olfactory anchor during meditation, contemplation or ritual work.
Angelica invites us to consider the relationship between roots and wings — remaining grounded while allowing ourselves to grow, change and reach towards new possibilities.
Its rich, earthy aroma can make it particularly suitable for grounding blends, meditation practices and rituals centred around protection, courage, transformation and spiritual connection.
The composition of Angelica oil varies according to the plant material, geographical origin and extraction method. Angelica seed and root oils can have notably different chemical profiles, so the specific oil being used should always be identified.
Traditionally, Angelica is advised against during pregnancy and for babies and young children. Current professional aromatherapy practice should also take account of the individual oil's safety data, dilution and route of application rather than relying solely on a general contraindication statement.
Always check the supplier's current safety data and GC-MS profile before clinical use.
